It had been a while since I last developed snorkels for freediving, and C4’s request to create an innovative one thrilled me. I analyzed all the important aspects, including those often overlooked, to create an effective and groundbreaking product. This snorkel needed to be the culmination of the experiences of many freedivers and focus primarily on some crucial aspects. The first important aspect was the section area, which needed to be consistent while having specific shapes to enhance comfort and exhalation. The second aspect was the tube/mouthpiece centerline, which had to be at 90 degrees for the bit rotation. This way, an orientation of the ventilation tube was achieved that did not compromise the correct positioning of the bite. A final important aspect to achieve was the flattening near the ear to ensure undeniable comfort even after many hours of use.

“Gli snorkel Meltemi e Scirocco sono realizzati in 2 lunghezze una standard e una corta. La versione standard (Meltemi) è adatta per qualunque utilizzo, ad esempio per una respirazione profonda dove svuotando al massimo i polmoni si rischia di affondare con il torace e di conseguenza far entrare acqua nel tubo – oppure per chi si immerge con mare mosso e pertanto viene garantita una più comoda respirazione senza il rischio di bere acqua – infine è altrettanto utile per chi si immerge in basso fondale con abbondante zavorra.
La versione corta (Scirocco) produce minori vibrazioni in movimento specialmente se lo si posiziona sotto al lacciolo della maschera, anche grazie alla forma piatta dove appoggia. Migliora la capacità di respirazione perché contiene meno aria viziata al suo interno. Risulta ideale per chi usa poca zavorra perché non incorre nel rischio che il corpo affondi durante la respirazione in superficie. Al tempo stesso è particolarmente adatto anche per le azioni dinamiche dato che durante lo spostamento in immersione produce minore attrito. La versione corta infatti è consigliata in piscina oppure in mare con acqua calma e zavorra limitata. La versione corta scirocco è più tecnica perché potenzia la capacità di riempire al massimo i polmoni. Infine nella pesca in apnea lo snorkel è una delle parti del corpo che si vede di più sporgere, pertanto se non è lungo impaurisce meno i pesci.
Entrambi gli snorkel sono realizzati con materiali galleggianti per cui consente anche di lasciarlo in superficie. Il materiale con cui è realizzato è uno speciale tpe – con una percentuale di ritorno elastico del 100% – per cui può essere piegato o schiacciato, ma torna sempre nella medesima forma.
La forma ad angolo di 90° tra il morso e il tubo è studiata per ridurre al massimo gli attriti dell’aria e i residui di acqua che creano rumore nella respirazione e consente al morso di restare sempre in posizione e poterlo riprendere anche senza usare le mani.
La forma piatta del tubo si appoggia e aderisce in modo più stabile alla testa e consente anche di tagliare meglio l’acqua nei movimenti. La forma a trombone della parte alta del tubo favorisce l’effetto venturi nel passaggio di aria e di acqua – ne conseguono 2 vantaggi: Il primo è una migliore respirazione dove l’aria circola con minore sforzo, per cui facilita il rilassamento. Il secondo è che durante l’immersione vengono annullati i rumori delle bolle di aria e acqua che riempiono il tubo – per cui è notevolmente più silenzioso.”
Nel mio caso amo portare la doppia versione di lunghezze, perché mi consente di cambiarli all’occorrenza a seconda delle condizioni che trovo. Siamo di fronte alla prima evoluzione dello snorkel degli ultimi 30 anni.

The Meltemi Snorkel has a standard length which makes it suitable for any type of use. The Scirocco snorkel has a shorter tube suitable for deep divers, for use in the pool or for use at sea in calm weather conditions.
The reduced length of the Scirocco model brings two important advantages: it limits vibrations when holding the tube under the mask strap and facilitates breathing, because it enhances the ability to fill the lungs to the maximum, limiting the residues of stale air inside. Both models are made with buoyant materials that allow the snorkel to float to the surface if necessary. Both snorkels are made in thermoplastic material with a springback rate of 100% – so the snorkelscan be bent or squeezed, but they always returns to their original shape.
The matt part of the tube is semi-rigid with a hardness of 80sh. While the shiny part is softer with a hardness of 50sh. The softer part makes the use of the snorkel more comfortable, as you can avoid to move the mask when the snorkel is placed under the strap.
The internal section has a constant area of 314 mm² corresponding to an average diameter of 20 mm. This size is considered in the field to be the best size for the passage of air inside the tube during breathing.
Meltemi and Scirocco feature a unique design. The shapes of the mouthpiece and the tube have been designed to facilitate the passage of air as much as possible, facilitating breathing, and to reduce water residues that can occur when breathing. The final part of the tube is flat to adhere to the shape of the head, limiting vibrations.
The mouthpiece is made in hypoallergenic silicone. Its design facilitates continued use while avoiding discomfort in the oral cavity. Meltemi and Scirocco are available in two color versions: black and carbon fibre colors.
